The mission of IRIS is to enhance faculty research productivity and visibility by providing opportunities for collaborative research and to serve as a sounding board for improved dialog between industry and academics. Additionally, IRIS hosts distinguished guest speakers and conferences for improved networking with other IS faculty.

Major research emphases of IRIS faculty include data-mining, collaborative systems and learning, knowledge management, enterprise systems, network design and security. The research methodologies include analytical modeling, empirical studies, as well as systems development. Several companies and government agencies fund IRIS faculty research.
